Classification and Application of Resin

Dec 8, 2021

Resin usually refers to an organic polymer that has a softening or melting range after being heated, and has a tendency to flow under the action of external force during softening. It is a solid, semi-solid, or liquid organic polymer at room temperature. In a broad definition, any polymer compound that can be used as a raw material for the processing of plastic products is called a resin.

The relative molecular weight is uncertain but usually high. It is a solid, medium solid, pseudo-solid, and sometimes liquid organic substance at room temperature. It has a softening or melting temperature range, has a tendency to flow under the action of external force, and is often shell-shaped when broken. Broadly refers to polymers or prepolymers used as plastic substrates. Generally insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. According to the source, it can be divided into natural resin and synthetic resin; according to the different characteristics of its processing behavior, it can be divided into thermoplastic resin and thermosetting resin.
By source
Resins are divided into natural resins and synthetic resins. Natural resins refer to amorphous organic substances derived from the secretions of animals and plants in nature, such as rosin, amber, shellac, etc. Synthetic resins refer to resin products obtained by chemical synthesis of simple organic substances or chemical reactions of certain natural products, such as phenolic resins, polyvinyl chloride resins, etc., among which synthetic resins are the main components of plastics.
By synthesis reaction
According to this method, the resin can be divided into addition polymer and condensation polymer. Addition polymer refers to a polymer prepared by addition polymerization reaction, the chemical formula of the chain link structure is the same as the molecular formula of the monomer, such as polyethylene, polystyrene, polytetrafluoroethylene, etc.

Condensation polymer refers to a polymer prepared by condensation polymerization reaction, the chemical formula of its structural unit is different from the molecular formula of the monomer, such as phenolic resin, polyester resin, polyamide resin and so on.
Composed by molecular backbone
According to this method, resins can be divided into carbon chain polymers, hetero chain polymers and elemental organic polymers.
Carbon chain polymer refers to a polymer whose main chain is entirely composed of carbon atoms, such as polyethylene and polystyrene.
Hetero-chain polymer refers to a polymer whose main chain is composed of atoms of two or more elements such as carbon and oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, such as polyoxymethylene, polyamide, polysulfone, polyether, etc.
Elemental organic polymer means that the main chain does not necessarily contain carbon atoms, and is mainly composed of atoms of elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminum, titanium, boron, sulfur, and phosphorus, such as organic silicon.

By nature
Thermosetting resin (generally used for glass fiber reinforced plastic): unsaturated polyester/vinyl ester/epoxy/phenolic/bismaleimide (BMI)/polyimide resin, etc.
Thermoplastic resin: polypropylene (PP) / polycarbonate (PC) / nylon (NYLON) / polyether ether ketone (PEEK) / polyether sulfone (PES), etc.
Synthetic resin is a kind of high molecular polymer artificially synthesized. The most important application of synthetic resin is the manufacture of plastics. In order to facilitate processing and improve performance, additives are often added, and sometimes directly used for processing and forming, so it is often synonymous with plastic. Synthetic resin is also the basic raw material for the manufacture of synthetic fibers, coatings, adhesives, and insulating materials. There are many types of synthetic resins. Among them, polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP) and ABS resin are the five general resins, which are the most widely used synthetic resin materials.

Resin Crafts
Resin materials are used in the modeling materials of this group of crafts, and its smooth lines and bright texture make full use of the advantages of its materials.
ABS resin
ABS resin is a copolymer of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, and its English name is Acrylonitrile-butadine-styrene (abbreviated as ABS). It is a large general-purpose resin. It is a project that has been modified (additives or alloys) to improve performance. Plastics and ABS alloys are the main modified plastics with large output, various types and wide applications.
ABS is a light yellow granular or bead-like opaque resin, non-toxic, odorless, low water absorption, and has good comprehensive physical and mechanical properties, such as excellent electrical properties, abrasion resistance, dimensional stability, chemical resistance and surface gloss, etc. And easy to process and shape. The disadvantages are weather resistance, poor heat resistance, and flammability.
ABS/PC alloy is to improve the flame retardancy of ABS. It has good mechanical strength, toughness and flame retardancy. It is used in building materials, automotive and electronic industries, such as televisions, office automation equipment housings and telephones. In the ABS/PC alloy, PC contributes to heat resistance, toughness, impact strength, strength and flame retardancy. The advantages of ABS are good processability, apparent quality and low density, and the application of automotive industrial parts is the focus.
ABS/PA alloy is a material with impact resistance, chemical resistance, good fluidity and heat resistance. It is used for automotive interior decorations, power tools, sports equipment, industrial parts such as lawn mowers and snow blowers, and office equipment housings.

ABS/PBT alloy has good heat resistance, strength, chemical resistance and fluidity, and is suitable for automotive interior parts and motorcycle outer cushion parts.
Permanent antistatic grades with antistatic agents are used for: paper transfer mechanisms for copiers, fax machines, IC chip holders, video and advanced audio tapes, etc.; in addition, there are ABS/PSU, ABS/EVA, ABS/PVC/ PET, ABS/EPDM, ABS/CPE, ABS/PU and other alloys.
High-gloss ABS is used for vacuum cleaners, electric fans, air conditioners, telephones and other home appliances. It is achieved by controlling the rubber particle size R+ (smaller) in ABS. Low-gloss ABS is used for dashboards, instrument covers, pillars and other automotive interiors. For parts, use the method of filling and thickening to make the surface microscopically shrink and reduce the surface gloss.
